Jonathan Harvey’s marvelous urban fairy tale is an
enduring comedy about a boy who falls for the boy next
door. Only a theatre-goer with an ice-cube where his
heart should be would remain indifferent to the plight
of Jamie and Ste, the two young boys who fall in love
on a grim south-east London council estate. Harvey’s
fine ear for edgy knock-about teenaged dialogue and
the language of people whose first reaction to feeling
is suspicion and self defense, exquisitely and
joyously captures what it is like to be sixteen, in
the first flush of love and full of optimism. Truly a
most unusual and beautiful thing.
